My Learning Space is My Environment – How about you?

As I watched the Gardner video he points out three major points. The first is Narrating which should involve both teachers and students. Gardner wants students to discover things on their own by investigating, exploring, blogging and creating their own virtual space that students can build. He talks about Cyberinfrastructure and wants students to be the architects and create, produce and communicate with others. Next Gardner talked about Curating which he wants students, professors and others to arrange there space so when others come to visit they can understand and get a sense of your identity. Lastly, Gardner explains sharing which is us putting ourselves out there which is very valuable and a great way to communicate.

..”We are entering the new age of education that is programed for discovery rather than instruction.” The word Discovery stood out to me because it leads to a Do It Yourself Attitude in my opinion rather than just having instructions read to you.

Well what will i say with that? What do you want to say? I don’t know, just tell me what you want me to write.” I like this quote because some students are lazy to go out and discover on their own their own they just want there teachers to tell them what do and that’s it.

I’d like to think students life begin life’s work when they come to school.”

Before I took this class AC 230, I took AC 101 which was completely different from AC 230. In my AC 101 class the Professor did not challenge us like my Professor in AC 230. In AC 101 it was a hybrid class as well but the Professor would just give us readings to do and I’m guilty of not do the readings because there were no assignments to followup on those readings just quizzes on the Boring Blackboard that was only for our use and practice. I am so HAPPY and i wish there really were more Professors like Professor Smith who lets us learn on our own and gives us assignments that when I walk out of the classroom I ‘ve actually learned something BRAND NEW. I am excited to communicate with my classmates about their work and getting there feedback along with my Professor which is very helpful. I learned so many things such as how to edit pictures in pixIr, how to edit a photo in Photoshop, how to make a video and upload it to YouTube. From taking this class I now have my own Blog which I am still building, growing, learning, exploring and discovering and I’m enjoying every moment of it. Enjoy it ..

Lab Experiment #2 For My Biology Students – Grades 5-6

To Do: I would like my students to research some experiments of there choice and of something they have interest in. I would  like them to

  • Present a Question for the experiment
  • Perform it with One Partner
  • Present the experiment in Video Format
  • Upload to YouTube

My Example – My Question to you is: What do yeast like to eat?

  • Yeast is a fungus and it likes to eat, just like me and you
  • Yeast produces Carbon Dioxide just like me and you
  • Yeast will grow when it has food and water
  • Yeast can be used in baking and if you take a slice of bread and if you look at it carefully you will see bubbles which are the Carbon Dioxide bubbles produced by the yeast
  • I will be using Sugar, Salt, Flour and the Control which will just have yeast and water, then to each I will add one packet of yeast and water.
  • I am using zip block bags so I will be able to capture Carbon Dioxide.
  • Next, I will identify what the yeast likes to eat by the amount of bubbles produced which is the Carbon Dioxide.
  • Does it like Salt? Does it like Flour? Does it like Sugar? Or None? Watch the Video and Enjoy!

In order to do this assignment I used the video camera on my phone to record and then I uploaded the video to YouTube.

For my tutorial I will  teach you how to make a salad which is filling and one you will drool for lol. I’m sure all of us who are students, professors, parents are always on the go and to buy lunch everyday can leave our pockets empty at the end of the week. I am obsessed with food and i enjoy cooking. Usually these are essential items we have in our refrigerator everyday but if not go to your local grocery and purchase these items if you want this special treat that you can take to work or school for lunch.

  • Fresh Green Lettuce
  • Ocean Spring Cranberries or you can use Apples & Pecans its your personal choice
  • Feta Cheese
  • Italian Dressing
  • Croutons (optional) – which come in many flavors, so pick the one of your choice
  • Cucumbers
  • Tomatoes
  • Red Onions
  • Grilled Chicken

To to this assignment I used the video recorder from my phone and then i uploaded the video to YouTube. It was very simple.

 

You Can Do It ..

I never heard of the term Edupunk but i like the sound of it. As i was browsing the internet i came across a link EdupunksGuide which explains what Edupunk is. It says An edupunk is someone who doesn’t want to play by the old college rules. Maybe you have interests that don’t fit the academic mold. Maybe you’re in a remote location. Maybe you have a family, a job, or other responsibilities and you can’t take on life as a full-time student. Maybe you love new technology and new ways of learning. Or maybe you’re just a rebel! Then there is Do it Yourself Learning from what i understand is learning, building and creating things on your own. Then there is DIY communities which help people get the knowledge and tools they need to solve problems and accomplish goals on their own without being told how to act or being forced to spend a lot of money.

That can mean growing your own food, fixing your own car, publishing your own writing or putting on your own rockshow. In the case of DIY education, it means getting the knowledge you need at the time you need it, with enough guidance so you don’t get lost, but without unnecessary restrictions.”
It means that the resources are in your hands and you’re driving the process.”

In this article EduPunks Say Do It Your Self. EdPunk is basically educating yourself and using technology such as wikis and blogs.

What we’re doing now as EduPunks is we’re kind of taking the same concept, the same ethos of the punk era and we’re applying it to education,” says Steve Wheeler, a self-proclaimed EduPunk educator at the University of Plymouth. “We’re doing it ourselves. We’re using our own tools. We’re bypassing the educational systems that have been put in place by the corporate companies and institutions. That’s EduPunk.”

In Never Mind the Edupunks; or, The Great Web 2.0 Swindle I liked Talk – Action = Zero which i believe is so true because you can’t have talk without action it goes together hand in hand. Some students show up to class and do not take notes or pay attention the lecture and when it’s exam time the results show. Some students miss many days of school and cannot pass by just showing up when they feel like. Talk + Action = Success.

In the world we live in today we have to strive for ourselves. It’s not like how it use to be when people were willing to give a helping hand. At the end of the day you have to help yourself  before you can help someone else. With the technology we have today we can open so many doors, we just have to be curious, motivated and stop depending on others, we have to depend on ourselves first. It is also good to form webpages or to blog because it’s a good way to learn, communicate with others and build or create something. In our life we have teachers, mentors, coworkers and family but they will not always be there for us, we have to think for ourselves and sometimes figure things out until we have a headache and maybe that’s the best way to learn. Knowledge is so important because so one can ever take that away from you.

I got this image from Flickr and i edited the picture in pixIr. This picture best represents me because since i will be a Biology teacher i will be working with the microscope and slides during the lab section. The number 908 i consider my lucky number. I always see it – maybe its a sign for me to play and i will win the lotto.

 

 

 

Poll Summary ..

My Poll Question – Chris Lehmann states standardized tests are cheap, easy and not good. He feels preparing the students for Reading and Math is Training not Education. How do you feel about standardized testing? Do you think it should exist? Yes or No? And do you think the standardized test is a form of Training, Education or both?

Based on my Poll – 7 people responded to my poll. Only one students agrees standardized testing should exist and the other 6 agree it should not. Here are some quotes from the Poll that stood out to me.

Pana Po’o
“It means to scratch your head in order to help you remember something you’ve forgotten.”

I choose this term  Po’o because when i become a Biology teacher i want my students to know it’s normal to forget things in my lesson such as the difference between mitosis and meiosis or if they forget the parts of an axon. The important thing is to take your time, do not get nervous and have confidence in yourself that you know the answer.

Chris Lehmann wants our students voices to matter. His vision of a school is where we not only learn but teach and he highlights I teach __ and fill in the blank. So i would say “I teach Biology.” You try it I teach __?

He explains the world  we live in today is based on technology and we should not just look at it but use it and it helps us learn. He explains he hated Biology when he was younger due to the fact he had to draw the pictures and these students just uploaded them easily and shared them with others.

Lehmann say’s standardized testing is cheap, easy and not good. He explains it is one test students are being trained to take and just fill in the bubbles.

Lehmann wants students to have a vision and to be able to see the world and opportunities through their eyes. Lehmann discusses how important it is for students to interact and get the information on their own. He wants teachers to ask powerful questions and allow our students to explore and discover the many possiblities.

He says we sometimes settle for easy when we need to be demanding. He wants us to bring this diverse wold into our classroom and for students, parents, kids and adults to all work together as a team/community.

Lehmann wants a students school day to make sense, for students to make connections which is very important. He discusses how learning about art and science students can make connections.
