My Learning Space is My Environment – How about you?

As I watched the Gardner video he points out three major points. The first is Narrating which should involve both teachers and students. Gardner wants students to discover things on their own by investigating, exploring, blogging and creating their own virtual space that students can build. He talks about Cyberinfrastructure and wants students to be the architects and create, produce and communicate with others. Next Gardner talked about Curating which he wants students, professors and others to arrange there space so when others come to visit they can understand and get a sense of your identity. Lastly, Gardner explains sharing which is us putting ourselves out there which is very valuable and a great way to communicate.

..”We are entering the new age of education that is programed for discovery rather than instruction.” The word Discovery stood out to me because it leads to a Do It Yourself Attitude in my opinion rather than just having instructions read to you.

Well what will i say with that? What do you want to say? I don’t know, just tell me what you want me to write.” I like this quote because some students are lazy to go out and discover on their own their own they just want there teachers to tell them what do and that’s it.

I’d like to think students life begin life’s work when they come to school.”

Before I took this class AC 230, I took AC 101 which was completely different from AC 230. In my AC 101 class the Professor did not challenge us like my Professor in AC 230. In AC 101 it was a hybrid class as well but the Professor would just give us readings to do and I’m guilty of not do the readings because there were no assignments to followup on those readings just quizzes on the Boring Blackboard that was only for our use and practice. I am so HAPPY and i wish there really were more Professors like Professor Smith who lets us learn on our own and gives us assignments that when I walk out of the classroom I ‘ve actually learned something BRAND NEW. I am excited to communicate with my classmates about their work and getting there feedback along with my Professor which is very helpful. I learned so many things such as how to edit pictures in pixIr, how to edit a photo in Photoshop, how to make a video and upload it to YouTube. From taking this class I now have my own Blog which I am still building, growing, learning, exploring and discovering and I’m enjoying every moment of it. Enjoy it ..

I was computer illiterate before taking Academic Computing 230. I was scared to use  a computer  before because I was afraid to  click on any other  tools  on an application  that  I was not familiar with. If the computer in my house were not to be working properly, everyone would point at me.  During the course of Academic Computing 230, I have overcome that fear. I have learned to explore many applications and its tools. YouTube and Professor Smith have helped me overcome my struggle. I have never used YouTube so much before this class. Now that I do use YouTube, I am amazed with what it can help us do. I have become somewhat of an Edupunk now. I strongly believe in Jim Groom’s DIY theory, which Professor Smith enforced in our class. Professor Smith’s do it yourself strategy really helped me through the process because he wanted everyone in the class to first  try and figure things out on our own. You can even check my blog to see how far I have advanced with my technology skills. I am extremely proud of myself.

According to the article, “A Personal Cyberinfrastructure” by Gardener Campbell, web would help students “build a personal cyberinfrastructure where they would play with wikis and blogs; they would tinker and begin to assemble a platform to support their publishing, their archiving, their importing and exporting, their internal and external information connections. They would become, in myriad small but important ways, system administrators for their own digital lives, one they would continue to modify and extend throughout their college career — and beyond.”  According to Gardener Campbell,  “in building that personal cyberinfrastructure, students not only would acquire crucial technical skills for their digital lives but also would engage in work that provides richly teachable moments ranging from multimodal writing to information science, knowledge management, bibliographic instruction, and social networking. Fascinating and important innovations would emerge as students are able to shape their own cognition, learning, expression, and reflection in a digital age, in a digital medium. Students would frame, curate, share, and direct their own “engagement streams” throughout the learning environment.” Furthermore, in the article, “A domain of one’s own” by Reverend, he states “as Brad Kozlek suggested recently in this post, “[the] blog is a tool for students to craft their digital identity with intention.” The key here is the crafting of an identity with a purpose, the conscious consideration and creation of one’s professional/academic identity online: a domain of one’s own!” This will help frame one’s digital identity and help him or her become an independent thinker.

Professor Smith has given his students the freedom to explore and create and express things on our their minds by using technology and motivating us to create our own space, which is our blog. I have learned things I did not expect to learn in this class. This class was a great hand on experience and I loved it! I figured it would have been just like all my other classes where I just sit and take notes to memorize about different parts of the computer and its applications. However, this was not the case. Professor Smith amazed me the first day when he had the class actually work with the computers, which allowed us to think outside the box. This class was a great experience!

After reading the texts of Gardner Campbell and Jim Groom, I learned that technology is bringing a big change in our society, especially in our teaching and learning style. The following picture shows my understanding of the text by Campbell.

According to my understanding, a personal cyberinfrastcuture  is a computer system used by individuals having their ownership in that system.

I agree with both writers of the text that we are living in the century, in which, we believe in doing rather than watching and believing in what others say. According to the texts, the technology is great way to have your personal space online.    Both Groom and Campbell believe in independent learning, which I also agree with. In our class, I believe that we all learned everything independently. We did get the ideas from Prof. Smith, but we learned to use technology by figuring out everything. I believe that our class is an example of Groom and Campbell’s ideas. Jim Groom states:

we are in a situation where many of our students and faculty are using tools like blogs and wikis to trace the work they are doing, both as part of a course as well as independent thinkers.

Groom says that the only question that comes up is how to save identity and have your own space by stating:

The key here is the crafting of an identity with a purpose, the conscious consideration and creation of one’s professional/academic identity online: a domain of one’s own!

It is important to have one’s own digital space since it is important to protect identity. Having you own digital space means that you can teach and learn in your own comfort, feeling as its your classroom.

When thinking of education 230, I heard that it is all about making presentations and creating lessons in digital ways and it seems a lot of work. When I entered this classroom, I found out that it is going to be a fun learning. As approaching the end to this course, I believe I have learned something different from what students used to tell me who took this course earlier. I did not find this course to be a lot of work. I learned many new techniques that are going to help me in future as being an educator. I love this idea of open learning, which not only makes life easy, but also creates educators who will make their future students’ life easier. The most important thing in this course was creating our own work and then making our own personal digital space. I do not think their was anything least important, since I had to learn everything from the basic steps. All the assignments were important in learning what I have learned by now.

Last efforts

I am going to start out of order in the second part of this assignment, and explain/ describe what I expected to get out of this class. Honestly I thought this class was going to be boring, textbook reading type of class. Partly because the technology that I’ve seen used in the classroom are graphing calculator, overhead projectors (which are ancient), smart boards (which are new) and Elmos (which I would only think a few schools actually have them at their disposition). And I didn’t think we were actually going to learn all that I did learn now. I thought we were going to go through the basics power point, Microsoft word, etc. But when you professor told us that we were going to blog, create assignments using free tools etc. I was very skeptical.  What I got most of this class, is what your goal was all along Professor, to get me to think out of the box and use technology in ways I’ve never imagined could be possible to design assignments for my future students.  And I can honestly say that everything you taught us was important, from the philosophical way the thinkers you exposed us to the way we can use free software to create artwork.  I like the idea that Gardner stated in his article “A personal Cyber infrastructure” in which he said: “…few people understood how to bring students into this world, aside from assigning them e-mail addresses during orientation”. And I find this to still be true among professors that I’ve met. I think that his idea of requiring incoming students to create their cyber space is essential (“they are assigned their own web servers…”), if we are to keep up with the technological advances that have arrive and will arrive.  I see that Jim Groom agrees with this idea of giving students their own domain :”So, how might all this change if we actually purchased everyone* on campus a domain for one year (at the tune of roughly $36,000) and framed the experience in such a way that all students, staff, and professors were able to easily setup and control their online identity through their own domain (something like jimgroom.net)”. And feel this strongly about it because a particular teacher couldn’t simply use blackboard despite the fact that there were tutorial services available to her on this campus, and that hinder my learning experience in that particular class.

Do You Need Your Own Digital Space?

In the above presentation at 2010 OpenEd Conference, Gardner Campbell asks you to “think the unthinkable” about the future of education and in particular takes to task the use of educational technologies designed to mimic the old model of classrooms. He also presents these ideas in his essay, “A Personal Cyberinfrastructure.” Both of Gardner’s texts are in part inspired by Jim Groom’s “A Domain of One’s Own.” Jim aks the question, why not give everyone their own domain, from which all of a student’s academic endeavours will be aggregated to a variety of places they inhabit during their time in college. It would become a space that a student would be,

…crafting of an identity with a purpose, the conscious consideration and creation of one’s professional/academic identity online: a domain of one’s own!

To Jim and Gardner, the need to stop fashioning for students special spaces for teaching and learning is a principal problem. They wish for educators to start looking to the internet itself as it’s classroom, where you carve out your own space to teach and learn (a bit like what we’ve done here with edtech.dewlines.org).

For this winter session you’ve been given a space to contribute to as an author, but now it’s time to take your work and place it into your own domain. To do this you are going to need to export your posts through the Dashboard’s Tools > Export function which will give you an .XML file that includes all of your work.

After that you will need to create either a free WordPress.com blog, or step-up and buy your own webhosting plan and with WordPress installed. Either is fine, though commercial hosting plans give you a lot more flexibility and control. Here is a link to how to create your on blog with a commercial host, and the WordPress.com option is pretty self explanatory (the site guides you through the process).

So there are two assignments for your last efforts in this class:

1. Create your own blog:

  • Export your posts from this blog and import them into your own blog.
  • Create an “About” page on which you give a brief description of yourself and your professional goals. You are also welcome to create additional pages and include any kinds of materials you’ve created in other courses or on your own.
  • Pick a theme for your blog and customize it. Add any plugins you’d like. Remember, this is now your space, it’s up to you to cultivate it!

2. Make one final post to Edtech.dewlines.org. In this post please include:

  • a link to your blog;
  • a reflection on the texts of Gardner Campbell and Jim Groom by finding an image, audio, and/or video that you speaks to your understanding of their work. Also be sure to quote either or both of them at least once in your reflection;
  • and finally describe what you expected to get out of this class, and if that changed as the course proceeded. What was most important to you? What was least important?

Weight training h.w.

I would want the students to record themselves doing a certain exercise. This is a good idea because it shows to yourself what your are doing right or wrong. You can analyze your video to see if your reps are consistent. It would be easier to teach if I can show the student what he or she is doing wrong when he or she has an example they can see for themselves.

This would be the kind of video I would be expecting, I made this video  and I noticed that I made some mistakes too. Another assignment you can do for this is to look up videos of a professional lifter and see how his or her reps look.

 

 

Poem English/ Spanish

For my project I want my bilingual students to choose a short poem in Spanish, the one they like the most, and then translate it in English. Once they choose their poem they would have to recite the poem in either language. Since technology is very broad they would be able to find the exact translation for the poem.

This would help students develop their knowledge with poetry and translation with both languages.  My YouTube video shows the author reciting his poem in Spanish and then I added the translation so the listeners can follow the recitation. I hope you guys like my lesson =]

Lab Experiment #2 For My Biology Students – Grades 5-6

To Do: I would like my students to research some experiments of there choice and of something they have interest in. I would  like them to

  • Present a Question for the experiment
  • Perform it with One Partner
  • Present the experiment in Video Format
  • Upload to YouTube

My Example – My Question to you is: What do yeast like to eat?

  • Yeast is a fungus and it likes to eat, just like me and you
  • Yeast produces Carbon Dioxide just like me and you
  • Yeast will grow when it has food and water
  • Yeast can be used in baking and if you take a slice of bread and if you look at it carefully you will see bubbles which are the Carbon Dioxide bubbles produced by the yeast
  • I will be using Sugar, Salt, Flour and the Control which will just have yeast and water, then to each I will add one packet of yeast and water.
  • I am using zip block bags so I will be able to capture Carbon Dioxide.
  • Next, I will identify what the yeast likes to eat by the amount of bubbles produced which is the Carbon Dioxide.
  • Does it like Salt? Does it like Flour? Does it like Sugar? Or None? Watch the Video and Enjoy!

In order to do this assignment I used the video camera on my phone to record and then I uploaded the video to YouTube.

TELLING A STORY: Using no words!

For this assignment i wanted my students to come up with a dance number where they are telling a story, they would not be able to speak… body language is the only way they can express themselves. The point of this assignment is for them to practice working together as a team and being able to express themselves without using words. This may come difficult to them but thats what i want,, i wanted to challenge them in using different techniques to send a message across.
